Things To Consider While Making A Butterfly Flower Garden

People do gardening for different purposes. Some do it for fresh vegetables and others do it for enjoying the beauty of exotic flowers. There is yet another purpose for which a flower garden is maintained; to watch the butterflies – the flying flowers.

Butterflies fluttering in the garden with their vibrant colors offer a more pleasing sight than the flowers themselves. To aid the butterfly gardener, there is the new technique called hydroponics which ensures the growth of flower plants even without soil.

To be successful with your butterfly garden, you should ensure that your garden has everything to attract the butterflies into it. You can design your butterfly garden in any way you like but the size of the garden and the type of plants you are going to grow in the garden will depend on the liking of the butterflies.

If you want the butterflies to come to your garden, the plants you grow and the flowers they bear should be liked by the butterflies. So the first step in preparing your butterfly garden is to find out which plants and flowers are liked by which butterflies.

You can get information about the plants liked by different butterflies either from the internet or from books from your local library. Though color is not a decisive factor in attracting butterflies to your garden, you can systematically arrange the flower beds according to the color of the flowers the plants bear.

A flower garden having a nice color combination will, of course, look attractive. If you can fill your garden with red and orange colored flowers, they will appear magnificent against a green background.

What the butterflies are more interested in is nectar. Therefore, pay more attention to planting flower plants which provide enough nectar for your visitors to your garden. Plants like honeysuckle, milkweed and summer lilac are ideal choices for your butterfly garden.

You don’t have to worry about soil and its quality to grow your flower plants because plants can now be easily grown in water. This new technique is called hydroponics.

All the nutrients the plants need for their growth are dissolved in water and the roots of plants absorb the nutrients from the solution. It means that no soil is needed for plant growth.

Nutrients are supplied to the plants in different ways. There is drip irrigation system, spray system and root immersion system. You can choose a method that you find convenient.

If water is not a constraint, you can drain the run off solution from the garden. If your water supply is limited, you can collect the run off solution, process and reuse it. Nutrient Film Technique is another way to grow plants hydroponically.

Coir is the best medium to grow your flower plants because coir can hold the dissolved nutrients more efficiently and allows the plant roots to breathe at the same time. Stem cuttings from flower plants will be a better way to grow plants hydroponically. Be very careful to choose healthy mother plants to take your stem cuttings. Stem cuttings from grafted plants are not advised.

You will have plenty of butterflies in your garden if you can plant the right plants which the butterflies like.
